São Tomé and Príncipe Citizenship by Investment Program: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Published on: 2026-08-17 Number of views: 109

1. Can I include dependent adult children in the application?

Yes. Unmarried adult children who are financially dependent on the main applicant can be included up to 30 years of age.

2. Can I change my name after receiving citizenship?

Yes, but under strict conditions. The initial passport must be issued under your legal name. Any name change requires holding citizenship for a specified period and completing standard civil registry procedures. Immediate name changes upon approval are not permitted.

3. Are there any restricted nationalities or eligibility limitations?

Restrictions are minimal. Individuals under UN, US, or EU international sanctions (including North Korean citizens) are barred. Additionally, applicants who already hold 3 or more citizenships/passports are ineligible.

4. Can I apply with an expired passport?

No. All applicants and dependents must submit a valid original passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity along with notarized documentation for due diligence.

5. Can parents and grandparents be included? Is there an age limit?

Yes. Parents and grandparents of the main applicant or spouse can be included as dependent applicants if they are 55 years of age or older and financially dependent on the main applicant.

6. Do I need to travel to São Tomé and Príncipe for landing, an interview, or biometrics?

No. The entire process is conducted remotely. The government utilizes remote biometric verification, meaning no physical travel, residency, interview, or language test is required.

7. Can I add a new spouse or newborn child after gaining citizenship?

Yes. Newborn children can acquire citizenship for a minimal administrative fee. A new spouse or other qualifying dependents can be added later by paying the required government contribution and background check fees.

8. Is the investment amount paid to an agent or directly to the government? How is security ensured?

Funds follow an "Approval First, Invest Later" protocol. You only transfer the required contribution directly to the government's official National Transformation Fund account after receiving your official Letter of Approval in Principle.

9. How long is the passport valid, and how is it renewed?

Passports are issued with a 7-year validity. Because citizenship is permanent and transferable, passport renewals at expiration require standard processing through authorized channels or embassies without re-investment or re-qualification.
